The shopping list is what finally did it. We were at Costco, and my wife had texted everything we needed the night before: onions, olive oil, and the good pasture-raised eggs. But by the time I walked down the dairy aisle, that list had scrolled up into a river of photos and banter. I bought the wrong eggs.
It was a small thing, but it stung. Our whole family life; groceries, financial decisions, baby photos, travel logistics, was scattered across WhatsApp, Dropbox, Google Docs, and SMS. The most private conversations of our home were sitting on servers owned by advertising companies whose business model is, let's be honest, us.
Years ago, I spent three years riding a motorcycle from Chicago to India. 100,000 kilometers across 33 countries on a Suzuki DR650 I maintained with my own hands. That journey beat a simple conviction into me: the things that matter most, you should hold yourself.
I founded Ayam Secure LLC in 2017 to provide independent private cloud services (passwords, file sync, private email) so people don't have to surrender their privacy to Silicon Valley. I built Enclave because my own family needed software built with love and care, not engagement algorithms.

Why don't you use end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for text messages?
Consumer E2EE (like Signal or WhatsApp) is designed because strangers run the servers, so you need math to prevent them from reading your messages. But with Enclave on the Ayam Secure Private Cloud, you have your own dedicated, private server instance that only your family uses. Messages travel over modern encrypted TLS tunnels, audio/video calls are end-to-end encrypted peer-to-peer (SRTP), and we skip the painful UX failures of consumer E2EE: no lost chat history when you switch phones, no broken multi-device sync, and full-text search across your family’s entire archive.

Which platforms and devices are supported?
Enclave runs as a high-performance Web app in any modern desktop or mobile browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and as a native Android app installed via APK. On Android, Enclave supports system notifications, ringtones for incoming calls, picture-in-picture video, and home-screen quick-dial shortcuts. Native iOS support is planned for the roadmap once our Android cohort is established.

How do push notifications work without Google Firebase?
Almost every Android chat app routes notifications through Google Firebase, allowing Google to harvest telemetry on when you receive messages and which apps you run. Enclave uses the open UnifiedPush standard alongside a self-hosted
ntfypush server. Your phone wakes up directly from your private server without Google Play Services or third-party relays. -
Can I export our messages, photos, and lists if we ever leave?
Yes, 100%. Data sovereignty means no lock-in. Your instance runs on standard PostgreSQL and persistent media storage. You can request a complete export of your database dump and uploaded photos/voice memos at any time, or migrate to self-hosting your own Docker container.

A few years ago, riding a motorcycle from Chicago toward India across 33 countries, I’d cook chicken curry for the people who took me in. A family in the Andes, a couple in East Africa, a stranger who waved me off the road during a downpour. I wasn’t cooking to impress a food critic or perform for a camera. I was cooking to nourish the specific people sitting at the table in front of me.
It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize that building software for the people I love is the exact same act.
